My almost five year old 'Baby' E loves making all sorts of crafts and hands on projects, but as a working mom I admit it's rare I sit down to make something with her. I make it a point to at least make something with her once or twice a week and most other days she enjoys coloring, drawing, and painting without my supervision.
We were really excited to be contacted by Kiss Naturals, a company based in Canada that makes all natural craft kits for kids. We received the DIY Lava Lip Gloss Kit, DIY Lip Balm Kit, and DIY Bath Fizzie Kit. We've found some time to try out the Lip Gloss Kit and 'Baby' E had a lot of fun making her own lip gloss.
Making her own lip gloss |
Even without watching the online video tutorials, it was intuitive and easy to do with the directions supplied in the box. We first filled a third of the empty lip gloss container provided with colored glycerin, another third with castor oil, last third with safflower oil, and then added four drops of orange essential oil. In just four easy steps the lip gloss was ready to use!
We only ran into a couple of minor issues, maybe because we didn't watch the tutorial. In the beginning it was hard to open the empty lip gloss container, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to pry it open. We also had trouble squeezing out the glycerin from the bottle into the container, I had to squeeze it so hard that my fingers hurt and of course it would be even harder for 'Baby' E. It would be nice if the bottle was just a little easier to squeeze. The last caveat was when we finished it and wrote her name on the container with a permanent marker, even after drying for a few minutes the marker wiped right off because the label is very glossy. Now, none of these issues are really about the product, it's just more of the process of making it. Still more enjoyable that buying one off the shelf!
What we love most about Kiss Naturals and we know our readers will appreciate, is that all the ingredients are completely natural and healthy for you and your kids. The essential oils are cold-pressed, the soap kits are SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) free, soap made with vegetable based glycerin, and natural ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, safflower oil, castor oil, and witch hazel.
The lip gloss tastes wonderful with the orange essential oil and I feel safe letting her use it. She feels so grown up with her own lip gloss! The oils and glycerin do not really mix together, so it looks like a 'lava lamp'.
Final product applied on lips |
I highly recommend these kits for children ages 4 and up. Little ones might need some extra help making these, but older kids should be able to do it themselves just fine. It's a great activity for birthday parties, sleepovers, and play dates with kids. Also a great holiday gift or a way for your child to make DIY gifts for his or her friends and relatives.
The kits are reasonably priced at $21.95 to $24.95 each for 8 to 10 containers of lip gloss, balm, or perfume. The bath fizzie and soap kits are $16.95 and $14.95 each (makes 16 little soaps). Then they also have Mini Kits if you're not looking to make so many, just $9.95, $11.95, and $12.95 for kits that make 4 to 5 of each product.
