The Supreme Court of Italy has told Vatican Radio to compensate the small town of Cesano for the six fold leukemia rates within six kilometers of its powerful transmitters. Starting in 2001 it has been reported that the electromagnetic radiation of Vatican Radio transmitters exceeded the legal limit.
The transmitter cancer risk study serving as proof was completed by Italy's most prestigious cancer research hospital. A Vatican Radio spokesperson responded to the ruling by saying "There is no justified reason for concern for any part of the population." I guess a six fold increase in cancer rates is not 'justified enough' according to the Vatican.
This is not the only incidence of similar reports. A 2005 study in England and Wales found correlation between childhood cancer and the distance the children lived from high voltage power lines. A 2001 report found association between the doubling of leukemia rate in homes with higher radiation. There are many such reports, and it seems to be only the beginning. [1][2][3]
