I find it ironic that sunscreen is meant to protect you from the sun's damaging rays and skin cancer - yet most of them contain ingredients that are considered carcinogenic or have some type of toxicity. Do you find that odd? I do. I don't want to be putting any chemicals on myself or my child. I remember one time I had a pretty horrible reaction to a sunscreen, that's when I started reading labels. Thanks to EWG, the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database makes it easier to find safe products. The Loving Naturals Organic Sunscreen is on their list and it is one of the few that gets a rating of 1 (on a scale of 0-10, 0 being least toxic)! Thanks to Loving Naturals we got to try this ourselves.
To me, the most important thing about skin care products are the ingredients. Loving Naturals contains the safest ingredients you can think of and it provides sun protection with the use of non-nano zinc oxide. It also has great water resistance. One of my favorite things about it is that it is so good for your skin, you could just use it as lotion too. So instead of applying yucky toxic sunscreen to spare yourself burning out in the sun, you are protecting your skin and applying a lotion full of anti-oxidants and vitamins simultaneously!
We applied the sunscreen before we went outside on a hot sunny day. By my standards it does not feel greasy. You have to first apply it without rubbing it in, let it absorb a little, and then rub in the whiteness. Once applied it gives you a kind of moisturized glow, but it doesn't leave white residue. It doesn't have any particular scent, and it certainly doesn't have that 'chemical' sunscreen smell.
For me, there is one more bonus, it is made close to me in neighboring New Hampshire! As for the value, it is more expensive than its toxic counterparts, but you get what you pay for! I would rather pay a little more upfront than pay for the doctor's bills later. You can buy a 5 oz. bottle from their website (lovingnaturals.com) for $18.99, with free shipping. Just one bottle should last our whole family the entire summer because we are seldom in the sun for more than an hour or two at a time. The price is comparable to other non-toxic sunscreens on the market and we will definitely be coming back to this one!
Three Eco-Babyz readers will each win one 5 oz tube of Loving Naturals sunscreen! That's right, 3 winners!
